Never, ever, toss a conference attendee list

One of the best tools there is for developing a networking database is the conference material you bring back with you from meetings you attend. If you are a grad student or postdoc, you may be only attending one meeting a year. But as you get more into a particular field, you could see three or four meetings easily over the course of a year. In each of those, you'll make great networking contacts and you'll want to have something that can be used to generate the right contacts for people you didn't bump into.

The most valuable of the meeting material is, of course, the "Attendee Roster." If you get one of these, hang onto it. You'll find this to be very useful later in the networking process.
