This article is written relating to a question on my blog – what did I find out after I coming out of the school that surprised me the most. I found out what Capitalism is in the real world.
20 years ago, when I moved from China, the highest salary in China was about $10 per month. Regular workers in a factory made about $5 a month. Needless to say, coming out of China, the wage from my first part time job was much better than a month’s work in China. I found Capitalism to be really good, not even close to what I was taught in China.
Of course, I had to work very hard in order to go to school to pay a BIG tuition and make a living at that time. I could not count how many people around me helped, and I will appreciate them forever from the bottom of my heart. I remember having a job which only entailed sitting and studying my own material and still being paid for it!
20 years later, as China started to develop Capitalism and learn from the U.S., the average pay in China may reach $200 – $300 per month. That’s a BIG change for the Chinese. There are many people who have never seen so much money in their entire lives. Chinese now talk about being “VERY” rich, about being able to buy the whole world, but not many people know what being “rich” is like in other countries.
Capitalism brings people wealth, brings money, cars, and houses into people’s lives. But is there anybody paying attention to the fact that Capitalism also brings much more pollution, toxic air, water, food, etc.? Even worse, Capitalism brings GREED into people’s minds.
I’ve heard so many people saying, “When we were poor, we were better people.” What will greed bring you? I think all Americans know, but not many Chinese yet. Please Google “greed in China,” or “greed in America.” I see financial crisis, housing crisis. I see people losing trust in each other, blaming government, blaming each other, and some even end up killing each other over money (even parents and married couples). I see many people struggling and suffering in their routine lives….
And yet, the Chinese are saying they are rich now, that America’s problem is just its own problem. Not many people in China know that Capitalism as a scientific system has its own economic development cycle, which is not controlled by people. China, as well as many other emerging countries that are developing Capitalism at the present, will come to the same stage as the U.S. today.
Some of my friends in China have asked me, “what are the Americans are doing? They have made our inflation so high that we cannot afford anything. Inflation in the U.S. might be a big problem.” I told them, “Americans don’t have inflation right now. In fact, they may be in deflation.” “You are kidding me,” my friends said, “America is the richest country in the world…” Everybody needs to learn something about Capitalism, I think. People need to be educated, rather than getting money and food only.
I can say, “Americans are the most caring, loving people in the world. Even when they are in trouble themselves, they still help others, help everywhere in the world there is a disaster.” Similarly, Chinese families have raised thousands and thousands of Japanese orphans after World War II. All of our peoples desire a better life.
One can say, people will not understand unless they experience Capitalism themselves. I say we need a new system to be developed, need new business models, need more education of what Capitalism is in the real world. Compared to school life, the real world is full of pain.
