I always knew I didn’t want a career in academia, and that notion was cemented during my undergraduate degree.  I came to realize that professors had to balance a research program, manage a lab, teach, “volunteer” for various academic committees, participate on advisory/exam/supervisory committees for graduate students, write grants, write papers, and review a literal ton of manuscripts, grants, theses, dissertations, etc, etc, etc.  People have built entire careers performing just one or two of those jobs, let alone doing them simultaneously while (attempting to) balance a home l
