The field of biomedical research is a dynamic and rapidly evolving field. The rate at which it is growing is exponential, meaning its speed of advancement tomorrow will be even faster than we perceive it to be today. My career as a researcher has taken me from a brand new and shiny Army research lab in Maryland finding therapeutics for chemical threats, to a mobile expeditionary lab in the Middle East monitoring for WMDs, to a government building in Washington, D.C. overseeing a vaccine effort for a pandemic response, and one thing has been made very clear: proper mentorship is an enormously powerful, make-or-break element in bolstering the careers of eager young researchers. Mentorship allows us to hit the ground running when tomorrow may require the speed of a gazelle compared to today’s rabbit speed. Mentorship is a catalyst that, when properly sought and executed, will rocket a career to stellar achievements.
