The National Research Council of the National Academies offers competitive awards for independent graduate, postdoctoral and senior scientific research to be conducted in residence at participating U.S. federal laboratories and affiliated institutions. Opportunities for research are in all areas of science and engineering, including the life and biomedical sciences, and many are open to non-US as well as US citizens. Awardees design their own projects to be compatible with the overall interests of the sponsoring laboratory.
Annual stipends for recent Ph.D. recipients range from $42,000 to $80,000 and are appropriately higher for additional experience. Graduate entry level stipends begin at $30,000 per annum and are higher for additional experience.
