    I like this quote that I read recently written by Rene Olstead - “I encourage all of you to seek out teachers and mentors that challenge you to think for yourself and guide you to find your own voice.”  My long journey on the path of academia has been peppered with numerous mentors many of whom have been instrumental in encouraging that independence in me. Although there are certain important traits that define a mentor, these are likely to vary depending on the stage of the journey.  At the stage where you decide to opt for grad school and long road to a Ph.D. however, it is critical that your mentors have solid grant funding, good networking and communication skills, and can open some doors for you in the early stages of your career.
