    My academic journey began in the Indian subcontinent.  As a fledgling emerging from the cocoon of high school, the traditional next steps were to apply for programs that would result in a medical or an engineering degree. Having decided not to go down either of those paths, I opted for a ‘mere’ Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.) in Zoology with a minor in Industrial Microbiology.  Our batch of students at the Women's Christian College (WCC) in Chennai, India were guinea pigs in some ways because the college had just initiated the option of a minor in Microbiology or Biotechnology and were working out how to direct the program.
